Aalto University

Luukku, the net-zero energy house designed by students at Aalto University participated in the Solar Decathlon Europe 2010 competition in Madrid, Spain in June. Nurminen Logistics was responsible for transporting Luukku to Spain and back.

Luukku was transported to Madrid on a total of four trailers. The elements were shipped from Finland by sea to Bilbao, from where Nurminen's partner picked up the trailers and transported them to Madrid. Transporting Luukku to downtown Madrid was not just a challenging transport job, but also a project that required careful planning and supervision at both ends of the journey.

According to the client

All in all, the project went very well. The logistical aspects were well organised and managed. Despite the international nature of our team, one of the biggest factors contributing to the success of the project was having a Finnish logistics partner. As always, the practical execution of the job gave rise to a number of new ideas. We thought that transporting the house in parts that are 2.4 metres wide and 4.2 metres high would be the optimal solution, but when Nurminen Logistics came in as a partner in the project with its extensive experience of transporting large items, we quickly realised we were wrong. Things would have gone even better if we had began our partnership with Nurminen Logistics when the house was still in its planning stages.

According to Nurminen

It was quite a challenge to optimise the logistics of the project when all 17 teams wanted to transport their houses to the competition site in the city centre of Madrid at the same time. A house that is an entry in a competition is a unique object with plenty of fragile parts. This made the project very demanding in terms of planning and executing the loading and lashing and securing of the load.
